3 generations of Racing Excellence: McKean Motorsports

Mike McKean
Don McKean
Scott McKean
Kyle Gurtner
It all started with “Mike” McKean who began racing mini–stock cars in western Pennsylvania in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Mike racked up many a win and a championship or two.

Mike was not alone in his pursuit of speed. His brother Don Mckean helped to build and crew Mike’s car. His importantly supportive role continued to his son, Scott McKean where he crewed Scott's drag race cars over the years. Now Don has added his grandson Kyle to his list of racing excellence, helping to fund and crew his go–kart and quarter–midget cars.

The second generation came along with Mike’s Nephew, and Don’s Son Scott McKean who began working as a crewman on Mike Pinney’s Midget Racing Team at the age of 12 (1986). As Scott’s experience and expertise grew, he soon found himself behind the wheel. At age 16, Scott began Drag Racing, and then at age 22, he made the move to piloting midget race cars.

Scott’s racing career includes a stint with Road Racing when he signed on to crew for Joe Huffaker in September of 2001. In addition, Scott was instrumental in starting Mini–Cooper Racing for Penske in 2005. This experience all culminated in Scott’s winning of the Modified–Lite Championship in 2006.

The legacy was soon augmented when Scott’s nephew Kyle Gurtner began racing quarter midgets. Having won several races himself, Kyle along with his uncle Scott and his grandfather Don, continue to grow their passion and mastery of all things racing.
